Not All Dogs Have 4 Paws...

One of the pet pages that I belong to on Facebook posted something recently that caught my attention. It was a cartoon photo accompanied by a quote from Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette. She was a well known journalist, mime, and actress and best known for her novel 'Gigi.'

The quote read...

"Our perfect companions never have fewer than four feet."

I immediately thought about our 3-legged child, Lobo, and how much I despise dog quotes that include "4 paws" or "4 feet."

I see a lot of these quotes online, but more so, with dog decor.

Like this.

I hate it.

Not all dogs have 4 paws and 4 legs.

I'm certainly not bashing the talented Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette. She was born in the late 1800s. I'm guessing that back then, doctors didn't amputate a dog's leg if it needed to be removed.

Sadly, I'm fairly certain they were euthanized.

Times have certainly changed.

When Lobo was rescued, he was on death's door. He had gangrene in one of his hind legs. The bone was showing. He had very little fur.

He almost didn't make it through surgery.

The day after surgery, we fostered Lobo as he began his road to recovery. It was a long road, but he's a determined and strong little guy.

After 2 weeks, Lobo had his sutures removed and it was almost time to start the screening process for adoption.

But then...

He was diagnosed with Lyme Disease and it was also discovered that he had an injury to his single hind leg that had gone untreated and didn't heal correctly. Because of that, he has limited mobility in his single hind leg.

We decided to adopt him.

That was a little over 5 years ago.

This is one of the many reasons why dog quotes and dog decor that make reference to 4 paws or 4 legs irritates the shit out of me.

Not all dogs have 4 paws.

Some have 3.

Some have 2.

And just in case you're wondering, I posted a photo of Lobo in response to the photo and quote with a brief reply.
