Being a Work at Home Dog Mom means that my home is also where I work. I'm home most of the time. Once in a while, Lisa and I escape our home for a few hours, but aside from that, our home is where I'm at. Because of that, my biggest pet peeves is clutter and housework not being done. For me, it's a distraction. When I'm distracted, I find it difficult to be at my best in terms of productivity.
Over the years, I've honed up on my time management skills to make sure that certain tasks in the housework category get done every single day.
I'll be the first to admit, sometimes it's a royal pain in the ass, but I do it because it keeps my sanity intact...
1. Vacuum. We have dark carpets. All of our kids have light colored fur. Need I say more?
2. Sweep and mop the kitchen floor. Between the muddy pawprints, dog hair, grass, dirt, and everything that gets tracked in when it rains, this chore has to be done on a daily basis.
3. Dishes. I do multiple loads per day. Aside from the kid's plates and bowls, supper dishes, breakfast dishes, and mugs, I also wash the dishes I use throughout the day when prepping and making snacks and meals for the kids, Lisa, and myself.
4. Laundry. I just took over this chore a month ago. I do 1-2 loads per day. This includes our clothes, towels, and the 329 throw blankets that our kids use.
5. Pick up toys. Our kids have a ton of chew bones and toys and fetch balls. I pick most of them up at the end of the day and put them into their toy boxes. Tripping and sliding on chew bones isn't fun, especially when you wake up on the overnight having to pee. Mad dashes to the bathroom and chew bones on the kitchen linoleum floor do not mix.
6. Clearing the clutter. We have various "catch-all" areas. Those irritate me to no end. I put things where they belong. On occasion, I'll give Lisa THE LOOK. That's when she knows to do the same.
7. Wiping the counters and stovetop. I've always had a thing about counters. A dirty and cluttered counter sends shivers up my spine whether it's a coffee bar or seeing it in the background when someone posts a photo on Facebook. The counters are always wiped down at night. Same with our glass stovetop.
8. Rinse the dinner dishes. The pots and pans and anything else that was used to prep and make dinner are washed after use earlier in the day. The dinner dishes and bowls and utensils usually sit in the sink until I do them the following morning. Before they're stacked in the sink, they always get rinsed with hot water and a splash of Dawn dish soap.
9. Straighten the sofa cover and fold throw blankets. I can't stand it when the sofa cover is bunched up or the blankets are in a pile on the sofa seats or the back of the sofa. It drives me insane. This is something Lisa does for me first thing in the morning before she heads to work.
10. Fix the blankets on all of the doggy beds. We have a lot of DIY doggy bed scattered throughout our home along with the DIY indoor doghouse and the kid's nappy nook. They all have at least 2 blankets on each. Some have pillows. The kids use all of them throughout the day. Before bed or first thing in the morning, I straighten out the blankets and pillows.
Yes, it's a lot of work to conquer these chores on a daily basis, but it keeps me sane. Focused. Productive.
That's a good thing...
