Purchasing A Sofa Is A Tedious Project

I had no idea buying a sofa was such a tedious project. It is. For the past couple of weeks we've been shopping around for new sofas. We're in dire need. Our current sofa is almost 25 years old and a family hand-me-down. It's falling apart. The cushions the in the armrest and lumbar area are pretty much gone. It's causing a great deal of discomfort. Several pillows are required to lean on the armrests. The fabric is also separating.

In our sofa shopping adventures, we've learned that in order to get what we need for our family, it's going to cost a pretty penny. There are several criteria. It has to be a reclining sofa. Family snuggle time and movie nights wouldn't be possible with 2 adults and 3 kids on a non-reclining sofa. It also has to be durable and withstand a good amount of wear and tear. We're not looking for a decorative sofa with all of the bells and whistles. And, we're not interested in a motorized recliner with USB ports and all that crap.

Our hopes was to purchase a sofa without having to charge it and pay interest fees. It's not looking like that will happen. We took out a substantial loan in the fall for our new vehicle. Lisa and I like to keep our monthly bills at a minimum. We are able to pay cash in full, but that would mean digging into our savings, nest egg and the kids' emergency funds. That's not something we want to do.

Purchasing a sofa would cost a lot less if we wanted a non-reclining sofa. That's not happening.

We've narrowed our search down to several. And, we're considering the possibility of a 2 cushion sofa instead of 3. The length is the same, if not a few inches longer, and it eliminates that useless middle cushion.

We have tested sofas at several locations. I am amazed at the difference in price from one place to the next. Almost identical sofa. A $200-$300 price difference. Wow. Just wow.

This has certainly been an adventure. It's going to cost us a little more than anticipated. And, we'll be charging it.

Stay tuned. We're almost there...
